Losing Streak At UMES Continues For NCCU

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Kyla Bryant scored 12 points and Morgan Callahan had 10 points and 14 rebounds for North Carolina Central in a 67-57 women's basketball loss to Maryland Eastern Shore at Hytche Center on Wednesday.

Shakiria Foster added 10 points and three steals and Aysia Hinton chipped in nine points on 3-of-6 three-point shooting for the Eagles, who are winless in 13 trips to UMES since 2007.

Both NCCU (8-18, 5-6 MEAC) and UMES (10-16, 5-6 MEAC) are tied for fourth in the MEAC standings with three regular-season games left. The MEAC Tournament starts March 12 in Norfolk, Va.

The Eagles never led in the MEAC contest. They trailed 26-11 after the first period and the deficit reached 20 in the second period. The score was 51-36 entering the fourth period before the Eagles made a push.

Bryant capped a 10-0 run with a layup to pull the Eagles within 51-46 early in the fourth period. The Eagles would get no closer as UMES finished with a 16-11 run.

Callahan, who scored over 1,000 career points on Monday, posted her seventh double-double of the season. Dianna Blake registered seven points and four rebounds and Tierney Coleman scored six points.

The Eagles outshot UMES 35.7 percent to 33.8 percent but UMES held a 55-35 rebounding advantage and outscored NCCU 36-22 in the paint. Ashanti Lynch totaled 17 points and nine rebounds for UMES, which outscored the Eagles 21-7 in second chance points.

The Eagles reached the free throw line 22 times but made 11.

The NCCU-UMES game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22, but was re-scheduled due to projected weather conditions.

NCCU returns to McDougald-McLendon Arena for its final two home games of the season. The Eagles host Howard on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. and Norfolk State on Monday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m.
