NCCU’s Women Earn Podium Finish for First Time in MEAC Championships - Raijon-Koger Takes Gold in Men’s High Jump

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – North Carolina Central University's women's track & field team earned its highest finish ever in the Division I era placing third at the 2025 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Monday. NC Central's men's team finished sixth, headlined by sophomore Jonathan Raijon-Koger's gold medal performance in the men's high jump event.

Finishing ahead of the Maroon and Gray in the women's championship was Howard (256 points) followed by Norfolk State (135). Delaware State finished just three points shy of the Eagles with 57 points. Morgan State completed the top-five (53 points) while Maryland Eastern Shore and South Carolina State tied for sixth (42) and Coppin State finished eighth (16).

The women's team saw two silver medal finishes on the track. Junior Laila Jackson added another MEAC medal to her collection with a second-place performance in the women's 800m at 2:12.51. Sophomore Melanne Sutton ran a new personal record of 7.38 in both the preliminary round and the finals earning silver in the women's 60m.

In the women's distance medley, NCCU finished third (12:33.34) with a team of Jackson, Gianna Marquez, Kayla Johnson and Alitza Dennard.

In the men's championship, Norfolk State (202 points), Howard (106) and Coppin State (82) rounded out the top-three followed by a fourth-place tie by Delaware State and South Carolina State (72 points each). The Eagles scored 50 points through two days of competition. Maryland Eastern Shore (46 points) and Morgan State (32) trailed behind NCCU.

After claiming bronze in last year's indoor championships, Raijon-Koger leaped 2.05m in the men's high jump for gold. The height is a new personal record topping a best of 2.03m in the conference's outdoor championships last season. Freshman Theodore Skinner jumped 2.02m for silver combining for 18 points for the men's team.

Freshman Julian Williams heads back to Durham with a bronze medal after throwing 15.40m in the men's shot put.
