GREENSBORO, N.C. – Samaria Jackson smacked her second home run of the season for North Carolina Central in a 14-6 softball loss to rival North Carolina A&T at the Aggie Softball Complex on Tuesday.
The contest was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was moved to Tuesday due to the threat of inclement weather.
Jackson's two-out, three-run homer tied the score 6-6 in the top of the fifth inning. The Aggies responded with eight unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings for the win.
Kia Borum was 3-for-3 with a double and one run scored and
Makiya Graves finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored for the Eagles, who collected nine hits. Graves and
Codi Mann both scored on Jackson's homer.
The Eagles (1-7 overall) struck first when
Daiyah Bailey scored on
Takia Nichols' RBI groundout in the top of the first inning. The Aggies tied the game 1-1 in the first inning but the Eagles regained the lead in the third inning on Graves' RBI single that scored Borum.
A&T (2-3 overall) put four runs on the board in the third inning for a 5-2 lead.
Tyler Suttles of NCCU cut the score to 5-3 in the fourth inning on a one-run single that scored
Nyla Rodgers.
The Aggies added another run in the bottom fourth before Jackson belted her game-tying homer in the fifth inning.
Katriel Wiliams totaled four RBIs and four Aggies had two RBIs apiece for A&T, who tallied 16 hits.
NCCU will play again Sunday, Feb. 23, against Longwood in Farmville, Va. The first pitch is 2 p.m. at Lancer Field.
