DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina Central University Department of Athletics has announced that Tanya Slimp is the new Assistant Softball Coach on Monday, Jan. 6.
Slimp brings over 24 years of softball experience including 14 years as a coach. At N.C. Central, Slimp will work with the pitchers, catchers and outfielders in addition to assisting with the batters. She will also recruit and coach first base for the Eagles.
New NCCU Head Coach Now-Allah James is very familiar with Slimp. James was the head coach and Slimp was his assistant at New York University (NYU) in 2022 and both were co-head coaches of three fast-pitch club teams on the West Coast from 2018 to 2022.Â
"I am excited to add Tanya to the coaching staff," James said. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience on every level of softball that will help us grow as a program. She will be a great asset to the NCCU Softball family."
Prior to her arrival at NCCU, Slimp was the assistant coach at Manhattan University in 2023. During her time at Manhattan, two players were named MAAC All-Conference, one was an All-MAAC rookie selection and 13 student-athletes earned MAAC All-Academic honors.Â
At NYU, the softball program produced one All-Region player, two UAA All-Conference picks, 16 All-American Scholar-Athletes, 11 conference All-Academic honorees and two Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar awardees during her time there. Before coaching on the collegiate level, Slimp was a head softball coach in the Seattle school district for several years.
In addition to coaching, Slimp has been involved in softball as a college scout, trainer and player since 1990. She has been a sport & position specific trainer since 2012 and is currently an executive board member of the Leonard Moody HBCU Collegiate Invitational. A Stockton, Calif, native, Slimp is co-owner of the HBCU Elite Prospect Camps, which she founded in 2022.
