CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In the first indoor meet of the calendar year, the North Carolina Central University men's and women's track and field teams had several top-three finishes at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge hosted by the University of North Carolina on Jan. 17-18.
Topping the podium for NC Central was senior Sa'Niya Fowler in women's shot put. Fowler's longest throw was 14.09m leading all 16 competitors in her first year in the Nest after transferring from the University of Incarnate Word.
Continuing in the field, the jump squad garnered two third-place finishes. Junior Malcolm Forbes leaped a distance of 14.12m in the men's triple jump, while junior Tia Lucas cleared 1.62m in the women's high jump.
On the track, freshman duo Deshaun Johnson and Cashmere James finished second and third in the men's 300m, respectively. Johnson ran 35.30 while James was closely behind at 35.37.
Sophomore Melanne Sutton clocked 7.53 in the women's 60m to clinch third. However, Sutton's fastest time occurred in the preliminary round with a new personal record of 7.50.
The Eagles return to the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Jan. 26 for the Flat is Fast Invitational. NCCU opened the indoor season in December at the same track.
