NCCU Women’s Tennis Blanks Norfolk State

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team earned its third conference victory defeating Norfolk State University 7–0 on Sunday afternoon at the Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts. This was the third time this season that the Eagles swept their opponents and the second time against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference competition.

Norfolk State (2-14, 1-5 MEAC) was shorthanded as only two doubles matches and five singles matches were played. NCCU capitalized and won both doubles matches for the first point.

Sophomore Candice Bernier and senior Jade Houston triumphed in No.1 Doubles 6-4 and sophomore Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and junior Kennedy Hill came out on top 7-5 in No.2 Doubles.

NCCU (6-13, 3-2 MEAC) continued clicking on all cylinders heading into singles. The Eagles were already up 2-0 after winning doubles and due to NSU not having a player to compete with junior Lafi Joao in No.6 Singles.

Hidalgo Vega completed her No.1 Singles match in a 6-3, 6-2 winning effort. Houston outpaced her opponent in No.2 Singles with a 6-4, 6-3 performance.

Bernier earned her sixth consecutive singles victory in No.3 Singles with a 6-2, 6-4 advantage.

Freshman Patricia Palencia won 6-4 in her first set in No.4 Singles and was challenged to a tiebreaker after a 6-6 score in the second set. Palencia went on to win the tiebreaker 8-6 for the fifth point of the match.

Senior Isabelle Exsted concluded the day by securing the final point with a pair of 6-1 sets in No.5 Singles.

NC Central now looks ahead to another conference opponent as the Eagles prepare to face South Carolina State University on Friday, April 12 at 2 p.m. at home.
