HAMPTON, Va. – The North Carolina Central University softball team concluded an eight-game road swing with a pair of non-conference losses, 6-2 and 9-4, at Hampton University on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior
Jaylah Barr led the Eagles on the day with three hits, including two extra-base hits, and three RBI.
NC Central (13-31) will next host Delaware State University in a three-game MEAC series at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary on Friday-Saturday, April 19-20.
GAME ONE: Hampton 6, NC Central 2
Freshman
Tyler Suttles, who was named MEAC Softball Player of the Week during the doubleheader, drew a walk to leadoff the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Makiya Graves to provide NCCU with an early advantage. However, the Pirates used a five-run third inning to rally for the victory.
Senior
Ivory Jones scored an unearned run for the Eagles in the fifth inning, but NCCU was unable to recover from that one big inning by Hampton.
The Pirates drew three walks in the decisive frame before a three-run triple by freshman Kylie Hill provided the big blow for the hosts.
GAME TWO: Hampton 9, NC Central 4
Suttles once again started the game with a walk before scoring on another sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of Jones, but the Pirates scored in each of the first four innings to complete the sweep of the twin bill.
Senior
Jaylah Barr tied the game at 3-3 for NCCU with her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning. Barr's blast to right moved her into a tie for the team lead in homers.
Barr, who also doubled in the first game, and senior
Imara Harrell led the Eagles with two hits apiece. Harrell had her own double in the seventh inning, and she scored on an ensuing single by Graves, her second RBI of the day.
However, a pair of two-run frames by the Pirates in the fourth and sixth push the final margin of victory out to five runs.
Sophomore Carmynn Bonner highlighted Hampton's lineup, hitting a solo home run and driving in another run with a bases-loaded walk. The Pirates produced nine totals total hits.
Hampton (15-27) has won four straight games.
