CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team received key contributions throughout its lineup and strong defensive play in the field while junior pitcher
Jaden Davis held Delaware State University's offense in check in a 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win at Thomas Brooks Park on Friday.
Senior
Jaylah Barr quickly put the Eagles on the board with a run-producing single in the first inning and classmate
Maegan Garrison launched an RBI double over the center fielder for an important insurance run in the fifth inning as NCCU (14-13 Overall, 10-6 MEAC) won its fourth consecutive conference clash.
Delaware State (13-24, 4-12) was able to score one run in the sixth inning on a bases-loaded walk as it started to rain, but Davis got a groundout to wiggle out of the jam.
Davis (8-15) allowed eight hits over her seven innings of work in another complete-game victory. The two-time MEAC Pitcher of the Week tallied five strikeouts on the way to improving to 7-3 in league tilts.
Sophomore
Makiya Graves and freshman
Adriana Person each had two hits for the maroon and gray. Senior
Ivory Jones doubled down the first-base line before scoring on Barr's run-producing single. Graves, who is now batting a team-best .474 in league play, scored NCCU's second run on Garrison's double.
Barr and Garrison both drew walks as they each reached base safely twice.
NC Central will complete its three-game MEAC home series against Delaware State with a doubleheader on Saturday that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
