CHARLESTON, S.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team was defeated 6–1 at the College of Charleston on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega's singles victory went to a tiebreaker set giving the Eagles their only point of the match.
NCCU (3-9) traveled across the state border to challenge their Coastal Athletic Conference opponent. The match started with Charleston collecting the doubles point with the duo of sophomore Kareem Abdul Hakim and junior Oliver Saarinen and the pair of sophomores Naresh Bharathy and Neiman Sneed each falling 6-3. Hidalgo Vega and freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy's match in No.2 Doubles went unfinished.
The College of Charleston (6-4) went on to win five matches in singles. Sneed fell in a pair of 6-0 sets followed by senior Shaka Cristellotti who was defeated 6-1, 6-0 in No.5 Singles.
Fortier-Gariepy dropped his No.3 Singles match 6-0, 6-2. Abdul Hakim and Bharathy both suffered similar scoring defeats. Abdul Hakim fell 6-3, 6-2 and Bharathy lost 6-2, 6-3.
Hidalgo Vega's match in No.1 Singles was the last to wrap up as he won the first set 6-4. His opponent Zac Larke would push back to tie up the match 6-6 before Hidalgo Vega's 7-4 tiebreaker victory secured the final point.
NCCU returns home facing North Carolina A&T State University on March 15 at 2 p.m.
