CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team dealt with changing plans as rain altered the start of the match and where it was played on Friday. The Eagles were able to play the match against North Carolina A&T State University indoors at the Cary Tennis Park but dropped the match 4-2.
In a play-to-clinch match, NCCU (3-10) secured the first point through doubles competition. Freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy and junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega won No.2 Doubles in a 6-4 set. Sophomores Neiman Sneed and Naresh Bharathy needed a tiebreaker but ultimately won 7-6.
Hidalgo Vega helped the Eagles earn their second point as he won his No.1 Singles match 6-3, 6-4. He is now 7-3 this season in singles competition.
North Carolina A&T (10-1) claimed the remaining four points of the evening. Senior Shaka Cristellotti dropped the No.5 Singles slot 6-0, 6-2 and sophomore Kareem Abdul Hakim slipped 6-3, 6-4 in No.2 Singles.
Fortier-Gariepy was clipped 6-1, 7-5 in No.3 Singles and Sneed's No.6 Singles match finished with his opponent triumphing 6-4, 6-3. Bharathy's match went unfinished as North Carolina A&T clinched the victory.
The Eagles have a break in non-conference competition as they gear up to play Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams in the MEAC Round-up starting next Friday, March 22 at the Cary Tennis Park. NCCU will face Coppin State University at 9 a.m. to open MEAC action.
