NCCU Sweeps Coppin State to Open Conference Play

CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team blanked Coppin State University in the battle of the Eagles in the first match against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference competition this season. Friday's opening match at the MEAC Round-Up was the first time NCCU didn't allow a team point from an opponent this year.

Freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy and junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega teamed up in No.2 Doubles and sophomores Naresh Bharathy and Neiman Sneed took care of No.3 Doubles. Both duos won 6-2 to claim the day's first point.

Coppin State (1-10, 0-1 MEAC) dropped all six singles matches against the NC Central Eagles. Hidalgo Vega dominated No.1 Singles with a pair of 6-2 sets. Fortier-Gariepy and Bharathy each delivered 6-2, 6-4 triumphs competing in No.3 and No.4 Singles, respectively.

Sophomore Kareem Abdul Hakim defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-1 in No.2 Singles while redshirt freshman Lucas Artigas earned his first MEAC win 6-3, 6-2 along with Fortier-Gariepy. Sneed's match wrapped up the day for the maroon and gray as he was victorious 7-6, 6-2 in No.6 Singles.

NCCU (4-10, 1-0 MEAC) returns to the Cary Tennis Park on Saturday, March 22 to face Morgan State University at 3 p.m.
