BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team was defeated 8-0 and 6-0 in a non-conference doubleheader at Campbell University on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior
Jaylah Barr went 3 for 4 (.750) with a double to highlight play for the Eagles, extending her hit streak to seven consecutive games.
NC Central (8-23) will next host Coppin State University a three-game MEAC series at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, North Carolina, on Friday-Saturday, March 29-30.
GAME ONE: Campbell 8, NC Central 0 (5 Inn.)
The Camels scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings to run rule the Eagles in five innings. Junior catcher Tristin Doster topped Campbell's run production with two hits and three RBI while redshirt senior pitcher Kayla Howald (4-0) remained undefeated on the season with a two-hit, complete-game shutout.
Barr led off the second inning with a single, providing NCCU its best chance at scoring as she advanced to third base before Howald recorded three consecutive outs to wiggle out of the jam.
Sophomore
Nyla Rodgers had the only other hit for the maroon and gray, singling with one out in the top of the fifth inning.
GAME TWO: Campbell 6, NC Central 0
Barr and freshman
Cameron Frye each tallied two hits for the Eagles, but Campbell junior pitcher Katherine Serna (1-0) kept NCCU from scoring for her first victory of the season with the complete-game shutout.
Campbell (16-15-1) slowly pulled away to the victory, scoring one run in the second, two more in the fourth and its last three runs in the sixth. Doster had another big contest, adding two more hits with two RBI and two runs scored while hitting a home run.
