NCCU Splits Friday’s Twin Bill with Coppin State

CARY, N.C. – In the first meeting since playing in the title game of the 2023 MEAC Softball Championship, North Carolina Central University and Coppin State University split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park.
 
NCCU won the opener, 5-0, before CSU secured the second game, 7-1.
 
A few different NCCU Eagle batters had strong performances, including a team-high four hits by junior Jai'lyn Edwards while sophomore Takia Nichols reached base safely in five consecutive plate appearances with three hits and two walks. Sophomore Makiya Graves and freshman Tyler Suttles each added three hits.
 
NC Central (9-24 Overall, 5-3 MEAC) and Coppin State (11-12, 6-2) will conclude the series with a single game on Saturday at noon.
 
GAME ONE: NC Central 5, Coppin State 0
 
Junior pitcher Jaden Davis, the reigning MEAC Pitcher of the Week, tossed another complete-game shutout to lead NCCU to its fourth consecutive league victory. Davis (5-11) has won her last three conference starts, scattering six hits in her seven innings of work on Friday while accumulating six strikeouts.
 
Barr quickly put NCCU ahead with a two-run double that she hit deep into the right-field gap just three batters into the bottom of the first inning. Barr extended her hit streak to eight straight games.
 
NCCU added three more runs in the top of the third, featuring a two-run single by Nichols and an RBI-groundout by senior Maegan Garrison.
 
Nichols led the maroon and gray with three hits while junior Edwards and Graves each chipped in two base hits.
 
Coppin State had numerous scoring chances to break up the shutout, total of 14 runners on base. CSU stranded runners in all seven innings, including multiple ducks on the point in each of the first five frames.
 
GAME TWO: Coppin State 7, NC Central 1
 
In the nightcap, CSU was able to take advantage of its opportunities by scoring in four different innings while NCCU stranded nine runners on base. Seven different Coppin State batters hit safely while six different CSU Eagles drove in a run to help salvage a split for the visitors.
 
Freshman Kendall Smith hit her third home run of her rookie season to straightaway center, producing NCCU's lone run in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Edward added two more hits for four on the day while Suttles supplied two hits and a walk.
 
Senior Vanessa Carrizosa (7-9) limited NCCU to one run over seven innings for the complete-game victory.
