BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy collected his first career victory giving North Carolina Central University its only point in a 6-1 defeat at Campbell University on Thursday.
NCCU (1-4) played two matches in two days for the second time this season. The Eagles were coming off a 6-1 victory over Hampton University at home on Wednesday before competing at the Nisbet Tennis Center against the Camels.
Campbell (3-1) swept all three doubles matches for a one-point advantage heading into singles competition. The duo of sophomore Kareem Abdul Hakim and junior Oliver Saarinen and the pair of Fortier-Gariepy and junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega both dropped 7-5 decisions. Sophomore Naresh Bharathy and senior Shaka Cristellotti fell 6-1 in the third doubles slot.
Fortier-Gariepy won a tiebreaker in the first set that turned the momentum of his match. He would triumph in the second set 6-1 for the win.
Hidalgo Vega was defeated 6-4, 6-2 in No.1 Singles and Abdul Hakim concluded his match by falling 6-3, 6-2. Bharathy and Saarinen lost their first sets before their match was ended by their Campbell opponents and sophomore Neiman Sneed dropped two 6-1 sets.
The Eagles step back on the court next weekend as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a doubleheader against Queens University of Charlotte and Johnson C. Smith University on Feb. 17.
