NCCU Men’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader on the Road

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team competed in two matches on Saturday going 1-1 on the road. The Eagles dropped a close 4-3 match at Queens University of Charlotte and dominated Johnson C. Smith University 6-1.

NCCU (2-5) began the road trip at Queens (3-4) on Saturday morning. The Eagles got off to a great start leading 1-0 with a doubles victory.

Junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega and freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy wrapped up No.2 doubles first with a 6-3 victory.

With sophomores Naresh Bharathy and Neiman Sneed falling 6-4, sophomore Kareem Abdul Hakim and junior Oliver Saarinen clinched the first point winning 6-4 over their opponents.

Hidalgo Vega and Bharathy went on to win the final two points for the Eagles. Hidalgo Vega finished his No.1 Singles match 6-3, 6-2 and Bharathy defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-3.

The Eagles put the loss to the back of their mind and headed to Johnson C. Smith (0-2) for the second match of the day in Charlotte.

With only four players available for the Golden Bulls, Johnson C. Smith would default in one doubles match and two singles matches. The duo of Hidalgo Vega and Fortier-Gariepy were victorious 6-2 in No.1 doubles and Sneed and Bharathy blanked their opponents to secure the doubles point.

With three points already collected for the Eagles, Bharathy, Saarinen and redshirt freshman Lucas Artigas earned the last three in singles competition.

Bharathy won a pair of 6-3 sets and Saarinen came out on top 6-4, 6-2. Artigas triumphed 6-2, 6-0 for his first collegiate victory in singles.

The Eagles will return home for a match on Friday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. NCCU will face Hampton University for the second time this season.
