CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team earned its second victory this season over Hampton University winning 6-1 on Friday afternoon. The score was identical the first time the two teams met earlier this month.
NCCU (3-5) has won two consecutive matches for the first time this spring. The Eagles are coming off another 6-1 victory last weekend at Johnson C. Smith University.
The last time the Eagles faced Hampton (1-5) was in different circumstances. NCCU hosted the Pirates at home on Feb. 7 and HU only had five players able to compete. Friday's match was moved to Cary Tennis Park due to rain hitting the area and Hampton had a full team.
Sophomores Naresh Bharathy and Neiman Sneed wrapped up their doubles match first winning 6-3 over their opponents. Junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega and freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy were able to clinch the first point with a 6-3 victory.
Hidalgo Vega and Bharathy both triumphed in singles competition with similar scores. Hidalgo Vega was victorious 6-0, 6-1 and Bharathy came out on top 6-1, 6-0.
Sophomore Kareem Abdul Hakim completed No.2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Junior Oliver Saarinen notched a pair of 6-4 sets and Sneed claimed the final point winning a pair of 6-1 sets.
Next up for the Eagles is a trip to the No.17 team in the nation, North Carolina State University. NCCU's match against the Wolfpack is on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m.
