DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team hosted Big12 Conference opponent Brigham Young University on Thursday afternoon falling 6-1. Junior Hugo Hidalgo Vega earned the only point for the Eagles in a thrilling tiebreaker set in No.1 Singles.
BYU (9-3) came onto NCCU's campus with a seven-match winning streak and started off by securing the doubles point. Sophomores Naresh Bharathy and Neiman Sneed dropped a 6-2 match in No.3 Doubles. Freshman Leo Fortier-Gariepy and Hidalgo Vega followed with a 6-3 defeat in No.2 Doubles.
Bharathy and redshirt freshman Lucas Artigas each dropped singles matches with similar scores. Artigas lost in 6-4, 6-2 sets in No.6 Singles and Bharathy slipped in a 6-2, 6-4 No.4 Singles match.
Junior Oliver Saarinen was halted in a pair of 6-4 sets in No.5 Singles while sophomore Kareem Abdul Hakim fell in 6-3, 6-4 sets in No.2 Singles.
Hidalgo Vega's match extended over two hours as each set needed a tiebreaker. With a 6-6 tie in the first set, BYU's Jack Barnett came out on top in the 7-3 tiebreaker to earn the first set, 7-6. Hidalgo Vega came back in the second set winning 7-6 after an 8-6 tiebreaker.
With No.1 Singles on the line, Hidalgo Vega triumphed 10-6 in the final tiebreaking set for the victory.
NCCU (3-7) will host the University of North Carolina Asheville on Saturday, March 2. The match begins at 2 p.m.
