Parson's Last Second Three Secures NCCU's Victory over Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – After being down by 17 points in the second half, the North Carolina Central University men's basketball team stormed back to win 78-77 at Gardner-Webb University on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt senior Isaac Parson nailed the game-winning three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to take the final lead. Junior Po'Boigh King led all scorers with 28 points.

NCCU (4-7) is no stranger to Gardner-Webb as the two played earlier this season in McDougald-McLendon Arena. The Runnin' Bulldogs took the first game as the Eagles sought revenge at Paul Porter Arena.

NC Central was down early as GWU opened the game on a 13-0 run. NCCU would shrink the lead coming within three points (16-19) in the first half with nine minutes remaining.

After trading buckets, Gardner-Webb extended the lead back to double digits, ending the half up 41-28. King and senior Keishon Porter each had eight points through the first 20 minutes.

The Eagles would go on a run of their own to begin the second half to cut into the lead. NCCU scored 11 straight points sparked by King and junior Dionte Johnson down 41-47 with 14:20 left.

NC Central kept the game within single digits the rest of the way gaining its first lead (63-62) with just over seven minutes remaining. The game stayed tight as NCCU had a 69-68 advantage before the final media timeout.

Gardner-Webb went on a 7-0 run, but Parson scored the final seven points for the Eagles including the game-winning three with seven seconds left for a 78-77 triumph and the first road win this season.

The Eagles outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 50-36 in the second half. Parson (13) and King (28) were the only players to finish in double figures for NC Central. Parson finished with seven assists and King pulled down six rebounds.

GWU's Anthony Seldon finished with a team-high 25 points for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

NC Central remains on the road heading to West Virginia University on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m.
