N.C. Central Women Fall to Wofford in Home Opener

DURHAM, N.C.The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team dropped its home opener Saturday afternoon, as Wofford pulled away late in a 75-56 contest at McDougald-McLendon Arena.

The Eagles are now 0-3 on the season.

Graduate forward Morgan Callahan led three Eagles in double figures with 18 points, going 6-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-9 at the free throw line. Sophomore guard Aysia Hinton added 15 points behind a 5-for-6 effort from 3-point range, and sophomore guard Kyla Bryant added 12 points and five assists.

Freshman forward Dianna Blake and freshman guard Victoria Morris led the Eagles with six rebounds each.

Thirteen of Callahan's 18 points came in the second half. Through three quarters, Hinton was a perfect 5-for-5 from distance, including all three attempts in the second quarter.

N.C. Central shot 33.3% (18-54) from the floor and 47.1% (8-17) from behind the arc.

The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening minute, as Hinton drained her first three of the game at the 9:24 mark. But the Terriers scored the next eight, going up 8-4 midway through the frame to take control.

The Terriers led by 11 at the break, though N.C. Central kept things close in the third quarter. At the end of the frame, the lead was 48-34, but Wofford scored 27 points in the final 10 minutes to keep the game out of reach.

Maddie Heiss led Wofford (2-0) with 16 points. The Terriers shot 48.1% from the floor and 51.9% from distance, while also holding a 40-27 edge on the glass.

The Eagles will be back in McDougald-McLendon on Monday, wrapping up a two-game homestand against Chattanooga. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
