Eagles Take Short Road Trip to High Point Tuesday

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's basketball team heads to High Point University to take on the Panthers in the Qubein Center on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. HPU is currently ranked ninth in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 Rankings.

NC CENTRAL BENCH

NCCU is looking for their first win of the season after falling to 0-2 in the first week. In the Eagles' last contest, they hosted Gardner-Webb University falling 88-82 on Friday, Nov. 8.

Junior Josh Smith led the way scoring 21 points and five assists off the bench in 23 minutes. He's currently averaging 17.5 points per game. Dionte Johnson caught fire in the second half against the Runnin' Bulldogs scoring 16 points on the day.

The starting five for both games this season was Johnson, juniors Po'Boigh King, Perry Smith Jr. and Kelechi Okworogwo and senior Keishon Porter.

NCCU is ranked 11th in the nation in turnover margin (10.0), 15th in turnovers forced per game (20.00) and 13th in three-point percentage defense (20 percent).

The last time NCCU played High Point was in 2011 as the Eagles dropped the game 82-74. The series between the two is 4-0 with HPU leading.

 

HIGH POINT BENCH

High Point opened the season 2-0 defeating two HBCUs. The Panthers defeated fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Coppin State University 93-51 on Nov. 6 and followed that performance with an 80-71 victory over Jackson State University on Nov. 9.

In Saturday's contest against JSU, D'Maurian Williams scored 22 points and eight assists to lead HPU. Juslin Bodo Bodo had a game-high 10 boards.

Chase Johnston leads the Panthers in scoring averaging 20.0 points per game to start the year. HPU has five players averaging double-figures: Johnston, Williams, Kezza Giffa, Abdoulaye and Kimani Hamilton.  

High Point is second in the nation in effective field goal percentage (68 percent) and 14th in three-point percentage (46.2 percent).
