PREVIEW: NCCU Hosts South Carolina State on Friday

DURHAM, N.C. – For the first time this month, the North Carolina Central University volleyball team will host a match inside McDougald-McLendon Arena. South Carolina State University will be visiting the Eagles on Friday, Oct. 18 for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match at 6 p.m.

NC CENTRAL COURT

NCCU (3-14 Overall, 1-5 MEAC) went five sets at Delaware State University after a 2-1 deficit on Oct. 11. The Eagles would eventually fall 3-2 dropping the deciding set by three points. Kamren Harper had 15 kills, Bella Dearinger gathered 29 assists and Gabriela Felix-Baeza totaled 21 digs. While at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, NC Central was shut out 3-0 last Sunday.   

The Eagles are in the top-100 nationally in team attacks per set (69th – 36.12), team service aces (97th – 108) and team total attacks (96th – 2,420). NCCU is second in the conference in digs per set (14.58). Individually, Dearinger is second in the MEAC in assists per set (8.25) and Harper is fourth in kills per set (2.97).

NC Central leads the winning record of matches against South Carolina State 26-9. The Eagles have an 18-0 winning streak over the Bulldogs since 2016.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE COURT

South Carolina State (3-14 Overall, 1-5 MEAC) has an identical record to the Eagles. Last week, the Bulldogs went 1-2 defeating Allen University 3-1 and falling to MEAC competition.

On the road at Maryland-Eastern Shore, SCSU sent the match to five sets before the Hawks triumphed 3-2 over the Bulldogs. Xaria Pickett had 22 kills and Kaia Barnett had a 30-assist, 14-dig double-double for SC State. At Delaware State, the Bulldogs were swept by the Hornets, 3-0.

The Bulldogs are first in the MEAC in opponent blocks per set (1.48). SCSU's Hailey Harris (Hitting Percentage - .291) and Miya Benson (Digs – 3.41) are fourth in the conference in two separate categories.
