Eagles Drop a Trio of Three-Point Sets to Elon


ELON, N.C. – Junior libero Loren Johnson topped all players with 16 digs for the visiting North Carolina Central University volleyball team in a 3-0 road loss to host Elon University in Sunday's action at the Volley for Unity in the Schar Center.
 
The Phoenix won all three sets by matching 25-22 scores to finish the three-day event 2-0. Elon (3-6 Overall) was led by freshman Caroline Berlekamp, who had 13 kills and four block assists.
 
The sophomore duo of Emmie Modlin and Kamren Harper paced the Eagles with 10 and eight kills, respectively, and graduate student Jeslyn Spencer followed closely with seven kills.
 
Spencer and Harper were named to the Volley for University All-Tournament Team.
 
Elon maintained a small lead throughout most of the first set. The middle frame featured 13 ties, but the Phoenix scored the final three points of the second set, including a kill and a block assist by Berlekamp on the final two points. NCCU jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the third set, but Elon closed the final set on a 15-7 run to complete the sweep.
 
Modlin completed her third double-double with a team-high 13 assists. Junior setter Bella Dearinger also netted her third double-double of the season with 11 assists and 11 digs. Spencer accounted for two of NCCU's three aces. Junior Kennedy Clark chipped in four kills four blocks (one solo) for 6.5 points.
 
NC Central (1-6) will next host Duke University inside McDougald-McLendon Arena on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The historic volleyball match between Durham's two Division I universities on Sept. 13 will serve as a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties.
