NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month: Matthew Swepson


DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University track and field rising senior Matthew Swepson has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for May 2023 in recognition of his outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom.
 
Swepson earned the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship Most Outstanding Field Performer Award for a second consecutive season in May.
 
At the 2023 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Swepson contributed 23 points, including a silver medal in the javelin throw and a bronze medal in the hammer throw.
 
In 2022, the local Durham, North Carolina, resident picked up four medals, including a silver medal in the javelin throw and bronze medals in the hammer throw, discus throw and shot put.
 
Swepson was selected to the 2023 Academic All-District® Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, in recognition of the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. He has also collected the NCCU Eagle Excellence Academic Award for men's track and field twice (2022 & 2023).
 
The throws specialist boasts a 3.843 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as a business administration major with a concentration in IT cybersecurity.
 
Swepson is an NCCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) member and participates in the University Honors Program. Swepson, who plans to continue his education in information science, interned with SAS this summer and hopes that will lead to a cybersecurity or project management position.
