DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University rising redshirt junior
Jalea Culliver has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for March 2023 in recognition of her outstanding performance on the course and in the classroom.
Culliver won the Lady Tiger Spring Invitational on March 12-13 and she posted a top-10 finish in all three events the Eagles competed in March. She recorded her lowest collegiate round with a one-under par 71 on the Crosswinds course that measured at 6,131 yards to finish the tournament with a 27-hole total of five-over par 113 to secure her first medalist honors and help NC Central to its first multi-team tournament title, defeating host Savannah State University and University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
In her first season at NCCU, Culliver finished with a team-best scoring average of 80.2 strokes per round. She finished with five top-10s in 2022-23, including three top-5s.
Culliver, who transferred to NC Central after playing two seasons at University of South Dakota, capped her first season representing the maroon and gray with an individual selection into the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship.
The resident of Omaha, Nebraska, will serve as NCCU women's golf team captain in 2023-24.
Culliver has been active with the HBCU Rise Program. Culliver participated as a panelist at the HBCU Athlete Movement Summit where she talked about her experience as a transfer student-athlete and why she chose to attend an HBCU.
The behavioral and social sciences major posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the spring semester and she is on track to earn a degree in behavioral and social sciences in December of 2023. Culliver then plans to continue her education and collegiate playing career at NCCU as she works towards a second degree focused in business.
