MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Begin Tuesday

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University brings a host of medal contenders to the 2023 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Tuesday, May 9, including four Eagles with top conference marks heading into the meet at Dick Price Stadium on the campus of Norfolk State University.

Tuesday's action will get underway at 1 p.m., with the conference championship event concluding on Thursday, May 11. Thursday's action will be streamed, in its entirety, live on ESPN+ beginning at 10 a.m.

Among NCCU's top qualifiers is Joidon Boddie (Raleigh, N.C.), the 2023 MEAC indoor triple jump champion and the 2023 NCCU women's student-athlete of the year award winner, remains a favorite to win the women's triple jump. The junior enters the meet with a MEAC-best measurement of 12.83 meters.

Fellow indoor MEAC champion Lamont Victoria (Fr., Prince George, Va.) continues to sit in the No. 1 spot in the conference outdoor rankings with a leap of 2.06m to his credit.

Donnell Carter (Sr., Waldorf, Md.), who earned a silver medal in the men's 400-meter dash at the conference indoor championships in February, boasts the MEAC's fastest time in the same event at 46.91 seconds.

Tia Lucas (Fr., James Island, S.C.) also captured a silver medal at the conference indoor championships in the women's high jump. Her season-best height of 1.65m ranks atop the MEAC, while teammate Alejandra Urraca (Jr., Jacksonville, N.C.) ranks third at 1.60m.

During last year's conference outdoor championships, Matthew Swepson (Jr., Durham, N.C.) picked up four medals and the MEAC Most Outstanding Field Athlete Award. This year, he enters the meet ranking second in the league in the javelin throw (57.74m), second in the shot put (16.29m), third in the discus throw (48.36m), and sixth in the hammer throw (47.00m).

Two other Eagles are just one spot away from the outdoor season's top ranking in the MEAC. Ashton Drake (Sr., Nokesville, Va.) ranks second in the conference in the men's steeplechase (10:32.71) and Laila Jackson (Fr., Avondale, La.) ranks second in the women's 800m run (2:11.39).
