DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University graduate student
Brendan Medley-Bacon has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for January 2023 in recognition of his outstanding performance on the court and in the classroom.
Medley-Bacon was named MEAC Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year, All-MEAC Second Team and MEAC All-Defensive Team this spring after averaging 12.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game in his final collegiate season.
With the start of league play in January, Medley-Bacon stepped up for the Eagles as he increased his averages to 14.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and a staggering 3.2 blocks per game in 14 conference clashes.
Medley-Bacon was selected as the top defender in the MEAC after leading the conference in blocks per game while also ranking seventh in the league in rebounds per game.
On Feb. 25, in a win over Howard University, Medley-Bacon tied the NCCU single-game record with eight blocked shots.
Medley-Bacon is a two-time All-MEAC honoree with five MEAC Defensive Player of the Week awards to his name.
The 7-0 center from Baltimore, Maryland, then participated in the second annual HBCU All-Star Game during the 2023 Final Four weekend in Houston, as one of the nation's top 24 HBCU draft-eligible players. Medley-Bacon scored nine points in that game.
Medley-Bacon posted a 3.833 grade point average in his first semester as a graduate student at NCCU in the fall of 2022.
