NCCU Women’s Tennis Defeats Hampton 4-1

CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team defeated Hampton 4-1 inside the Cary Tennis Park on Thursday morning.

The action began with freshman Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and sophomore Isabelle Exsted teamed up to sweep the combination of Lucia Jorrin Fernandez and Franzene Tsui 6-0. 

Sophomore Lafi Joao and junior Jade Houston paired up and fell 2-6 to Mio Kozaki and Diana Starodubtseva. 

The duo of sophomore Kennedy Hill and reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week Candice Bernier took down Sofia Sokolova and Angelina Blinova 6-4 to claim the doubles point.

In singles action, Hidalgo Vega beat Sokolova (6-3, 6-2), and Houston clipped Starodubtseva (6-1, 6-0) in the second and third slots. 

Hill fell to Blinova 5-7, 4-6 in the No.1 spot, while Joao tripped Fernandez 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot. 

Junior Maria Picazo Martin and Exsted's singles competition went unfinished due to the Eagles clinching the victory.

Up next, NCCU (2-5) will host Eastern Kentucky University tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Cary Tennis Park and host rival North Carolina A&T State University on Saturday at Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts at noon.
