NCCU Softball Begins League Play with Two Wins

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team picked up 4-3 and 6-3 road wins at South Carolina State University on Sunday afternoon to start the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) portion of its scheduled with a doubleheader sweep.

Junior Imara Harrell highlighted play for the victorious Eagles with five hits on the day, including two singles, one double, one triple and one home run.

NC Central (4-20 Overall, 2-0 MEAC) will try and complete the series sweep of South Carolina State (1-16, 0-2) when the Eagles and Bulldogs play a single game on Monday beginning at noon.

GAME ONE: NC Central 4, South Carolina State 3

The Eagles constructed a three-run lead and then held off a late rally attempt by the Bulldogs in the bottom of the seventh to escape with a narrow one-run triumph.

Harrell started NCCU's scoring with a two-run homer in the third inning. Her first homer of the season was her second collegiate long ball.

The Eagles added important insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Harrell, who hit safely in all three of her at bats, singled and later scored in the sixth inning while her triple down the left field line in the seventh innings completed the maroon and gray scoring.

SCSU scored two quick runs on a double in the bottom of the seventh to pull within one run. But, with the potential game-tying run in scoring position, sophomore Ashanti Eubanks retired the next three Bulldogs in order for the save. Classmate Jaden Davis earned her second win of the season after tossing six strong innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Harrell accounted for three of NCCU's four hits. Junior Jaylah Barr joined Harrell in scoring twice.

GAME TWO: NC Central 6, South Carolina State 3

Trailing 2-nil late in the contest, NCCU exploded for a six-run sixth inning in the nightcap to complete the sweep. The decisive frame featured a two-run double by Barr, a two-run home run by junior Maegan Garrison, a solo home run by junior Ivory Jones and an RBI-single by freshman Takia Nichols.

Harrell doubled early in the sixth inning to complete a doubleheader cycle.

The solo home run to cap the maroon and gray scoring by Jones was her team-high sixth homer of the season. Garrison's long ball was her fourth home run of the campaign.

Barr tossed three innings of relief and was NCCU's pitcher of record to secure her first win of the year. Eubanks hurled the first four innings.

NCCU finished with a 9-5 hit advantage over SCSU with Harrell and freshman Makiya Graves both hitting safely twice.
