NCCU Nips SCSU in Extra Innings to Sweep Series

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and sophomore pitcher Jaden Davis made those runs hold up in 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference road win at South Carolina State University on Monday.

Davis, who registered a career-high 10 strikeouts in Sunday's game one victory, matched that K total by fanning 10 more Bulldogs just one day later. After holding SCSU to just one run over her nine-inning complete game triumph, Davis now leads NCCU with three wins on the season.

NC Central was just one of two MEAC schools to go undefeated in the first week of league play.

Trailing 1-nil heading into the final inning, junior Jaylah Barr hit a leadoff home run to begin the seventh inning, which leveled the score and sent the contest to extra innings. Barr's third home run of the campaign was drilled over the right-center field fence.

Barr then drew a walk and scored again in the ninth inning to put the Eagles ahead for good on a double by junior Maegan Garrison, who also scored in the frame.

Davis only allowed four hits over her nine innings in the circle while NCCU accumulated 10 hits. All nine Eagle started were credited with a hit and freshman Takia Nichols led the victors with two base knocks.

NC Central (5-20 Overall, 3-0 MEAC) will next host University of Maryland Eastern Shore in a three-game MEAC series. The Eagles and Hawks will begin play at Thomas Brooks Park (Cary, N.C.) with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., and will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday starting at noon.
