CARY, N.C. – In a tightly contested match-up on day two of the MEAC Men's Tennis Round-Up, Morgan State University edged North Carolina Central University, 4-3, at Cary Tennis Park on Friday afternoon.
In doubles action,
Sebastian Pino and
Oliver Saarinen captured their third doubles victory of the season with a 6-3 triumph over Morgan State's Sebastian Lopez and Makkijha Brown at the No. 1 position.
After MSU registered a narrow 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles, the Eagles had an opportunity on-serve to earn the doubles point, but the Bears pulled out another 7-5 victory at the No. 3 spot.
That doubles point proved to be huge, as Morgan State won the Nos. 1, 3 and 5 singles matches to clinch the match.
Still, the Eagles continued to battle. NCCU freshmen
Facundo Olmedo and
Naresh Bharathy remained unbeaten at the MEAC Round-Up with wins at No. 6 and No. 4 singles, respectively. The three-set, come-from-behind victory for Bharathy is the team-best fifth singles win of the season for the rookie.
In the last singles match on the court, NCCU's Saarinen captured his first singles triumph of the season with a highly competitive three-set win over MSU's Lopez (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).
NCCU (3-12, 1-1 MEAC) wraps up competition at the MEAC Round-Up on Saturday (March 18) at 12 p.m., versus Howard University at Cary Tennis Park. Admission is free.
