VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The North Carolina Central University men's and women's teams tallied the most points as a Division I program at the 2023 MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 19-21 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
The NCCU men's team registered 62.5 points to place fifth, bettering its prior top efforts from a year ago when the Eagles finished eighth with 39 points.
The NCCU women's team placed sixth with 56 points to improve upon the previous high of 53 points from last season.
The two squads combined to capture nine individual medals (two gold, five silver, two bronze), plus a bronze medal performance in the women's distance medley.
NCCU junior
Joidon Boddie earned her first career medal, and it was the golden variety, winning the conference championship in the women's triple jump. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native achieved a career-best distance of 12.59 meters (41-3.75).
Freshman
Lamont Victoria (Prince George, Va.) entered his first MEAC championship as the favorite in the men's high jump, and he lived up to the advance billing, leaping 2.05m (6-8.75) to capture the conference title.
Jaelyn Blanc
NCCU senior
Jaelyn Blanc (Hyattsville, Md.) claimed a pair of silver medals after placing second in both the men's long jump with a mark of 7.33m (24-0.75) and the triple jump with a career-best measurement of 15.23m (49-11.75). For his efforts, Blanc took home the Most Outstanding Field Performer award.
Other silver medal performances were registered by
Micah Fulton (Pasadena, Calif.) in the women's triple jump (12.40m/career-best),
Tia Lucas (James Island, S.C.) in the women's high jump (1.65m), and
Donnell Carter (Waldorf, Md.) in the men's 400-meter dash (47.70).
Bronze medals were presented to
Laila Jackson (Avondale, La.) in the women's 800m run (2:14.28/career-best),
Victoria Swepson (Durham, N.C.) in the women's 1 mile run (5:07.63/career-best), and the women's distance medley unit (12:22.13), consisting of Jackson,
Summer Washington (Charlotte, N.C.),
Gianna Marquez (Deer Park, N.Y.), and Swepson.
