DURHAM, N.C. – Junior forward
Morgan Callahan supplied season-high totals of 16 points and four steals for the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team in a 93-45 road loss to Duke University inside Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday.
Callahan has reached double-digit points in three consecutive games after filling up the box score with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals in NCCU's first game against the Blue Devils in 14 years.
Duke (4-2) made half of its shots from the field, outrebounded the Eagles by 20 and tallied 11 blocks to snap a two-game skid and end NCCU's (3-3) three-game win streak.
The Blue Devils scored the first 18 points of the contest before senior
Tippy Robertson put the Eagles on the board with a 3-pointer from the right wing at the 5:33 mark of the first quarter. Duke made over half of its baskets in the first half while holding NCCU to just 17.1 percent shooting from the field to lead 32-10 after 10 minutes of play and 52-16 at halftime.
Callahan accounted for half of NCCU's points in the first half.
The Eagles had their best scoring quarter coming out of the intermission. Callahan added six more points in the third quarter and her jumper in the final minute had NCCU leading that period, 17-16, before Duke made a couple free throws in the final seconds to take a 70-33 cushion into the last stanza. The Blue Devils finished off the 48-point victory will a sizzling 64.3 percent shooting performance in the fourth quarter.
Senior
Kimeira Burks was NCCU's second leading scorer, bucketing all eight of her points in the second half. Burks also paced the maroon and gray with six rebounds.
Robertson finished with seven points and freshman
Kyla Bryant added five points while sophomore
Ray'ven Robinson and freshman
Jada Tiggett each supplied four points. Robinson had a team-high three assists.
Duke had five double-digit scorers with junior Reigan Richardson leading the way with a game-high 22 points. Freshman Delaney Thomas contributed a double-double with 12 points and
NC Central will next play at Presbyterian College on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
