DURHAM, N.C. – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) showcased its dedicated support of women in sports through the Finish Line Scholarship benefiting two senior student-athletes at North Carolina Central University.
The scholarship recipients are softball infielder Maegan Garrison (Harrisburg, N.C.) and volleyball setter Lauren Janok (Rougemont, N.C.).
In addition to NCCU, Blue Cross NC has teamed up with four other college sports partners across North Carolina to highlight women's athletics through the scholarship program. Each recipient of the Finish Line Scholarship was nominated by their school's athletics program for exemplifying values of leadership, integrity and community.
"I'm extremely proud to be Maegan Garrison's coach," said Cat Tarvin, NCCU softball head coach. "She has been an exemplary student and athlete throughout her career at NCCU. I couldn't think of a more deserving recipient for this scholarship."
"Lauren is the ultimate competitor both on the court and in the classroom," said Jody Brown, NCCU volleyball head coach. "Her drive and intensity continue to help her reach her dreams of the highest level of play. Her commitment to success has carried her through the adversity of the everyday challenges of being a successful Division I student-athlete."
Additionally, Blue Cross NC is awarding each scholarship recipients' high school alma mater with funding to support the next generation of women athletes in North Carolina.
Blue Cross NC representatives Cheryl Parquet, director of community engagement and marketing activation, and Anne Gary, senior program manager for sponsorships, made the scholarship presentation during halftime of the NCCU women's basketball game on Monday, Jan. 23.
