CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team began its spring campaign with a 7-0 loss to #2 ranked University of North Carolina inside Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Wednesday night.
The maroon and gray captured 14 games in singles play and two games across the three doubles matches.
In singles play, sophomore
Isabelle Exsted took five games but was outlasted by UNC's Sophia Patel 6-2, 6-3.
Additionally in singles play, three Eagles faced players that are currently in the ITA Rankings. Junior
Jade Houston was clipped by 18th-ranked Anika Yarlagadda 6-1, 6-0. Freshmen
Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and
Candice Bernier fell to #48 Reilly Tran and #58 Elizabeth Scotty. Both Eagles were defeated 6-1, 6-1.
Rounding out the NCCU singles performances were sophomore
Kennedy Hill who lost 6-1, 6-0 to Reese Brantmeier, while junior
Maria Picazo Martin fell 6-2, 6-1 to Sara McClure.
In doubles, the combination of Hill and Houston was defeated 6-1 by Brantmeier and Tran, while Hildalgo Vega and Bernier fell 6-0 to Scotty and Yarlagadda.
Up next, NCCU (0-1) will head to Greenville to battle the East Carolina University Pirates inside ECU's Indoor Tennis Complex on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 12:00 p.m.
