ELON, N.C. – Freshman
Tori Wilson racked up a team-high 12 points for the North Carolina Central University volleyball team in a 3-0 neutral-site loss to UNCG at the Aggie/Phoenix Volley for University on Saturday afternoon.
NCCU lost the final two sets by the narrowest of margins after posting a season-best .193 hitting percentage. However, the Spartans held on both times to complete the three-set sweep by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 26-24.
Wilson led the Eagles with nine kills and provided two aces and two block assists to accumulate her dozen points.
The six starters accounted for all of NCCU's kills. Freshman
Kamren Harper totaled seven kills, senior
Autumn DeSantis registered six kills, freshman
Emmie Modlin tallied five kills, senior
Daryn Armstrong netted four kills and sophomore
Vanila Pulu-Suliafu chipped in three kills.
DeSantis (three block assists) and Modlin (two aces, one block assist) both finished with 7.5 points.
Pulu-Suliafu also had team-best marks of 26 assists and three aces while just missing a double-double with nine digs. Sophomore libero
Loren Johnson led the maroon and gray with 15 digs.
Tied 16-16 in the first set, UNCG closed the opening frame on a 9-3 run to take the early advantage. The Eagles then were two points away from leveling the match leading 23-22 in the middle stanza, but the Spartans rattled off the next three points. Trailing 24-21 in the third set, NCCU used kills by Modlin and DeSantis around a block by DeSantis and Pulu-Suliafu to even the score and extend the match. However, junior Taylor Robinson blasted back-to-back kills for the victors to close out the match.
Robinson had six of her match-high 15 kills in the third set. The Spartans hit .222 for the match with senior setter Gabriela McHugh orchestrating the attack with 36 assists.
NC Central will return home and next host Campbell University on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
