Matthew Swepson Earns MEAC Most Outstanding Field Athlete Award

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University track and field teams captured one gold medal, two silver medals, and five bronze medals at the 2022 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 12-14, at William "Dick" Price Stadium.

NCCU sophomore Matthew Swepson picked up four medals, including his lone silver medal in the men's javelin throw with a career-best mark of 56.56 meters. The Durham, North Carolina, native also set a personal-best in the hammer throw with a 45.22m heave to place third. His other two bronze medals came in the discus and shot put, posting distances of 45.31m and 15.21m, respectively. His 26-point performance garnered him the Most Outstanding Field Athlete Award, the first Eagle to do so in the Division I era.

Senior Marvin Jones won the men's high jump with a personal-best leap of 2.13m. For Jones, this is his fourth career MEAC medal and third gold, making him the first Eagle to earn three gold medals in the Division I era. The Hillsborough, North Carolina, native previously claimed a bronze medal during the 2020 MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, a gold medal at the 2021 MEAC Outdoor Championships, and a gold medal in the 2022 MEAC Indoor Championships.

Also soaring to the podium, junior Jaelyn Blanc earned the silver medal in the men's long jump and the bronze medal in the men's triple jump. In the long jump, he soared a personal-best 7.63m, being one of four competitors to have a distance over 7.50m. The Hyattsville, Maryland, native leaped 14.78m in the triple jump.

On the track, freshman Victoria Swepson earned her second medal of her career by claiming the bronze medal in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 12:10.76.

In the team standings, the NCCU men posted a Division I era record and best finish at the MEAC Outdoor championships with 75 points to claim fifth place, nearly doubling their previous highest mark of 40 points in 2017. The women recorded 42 points for seventh place.
