Jaylah Barr put the Eagles ahead from the start with her league-leading sixth home run as the North Carolina Central University softball team completed a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series sweep of Delaware State with an 8-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park.
NCCU scored a total of 30 runs in the three-game series sweep of the Hornets as the Eagles improved to 9-19 on the season and 6-3 in the league. Delaware State departed at 3-21 and 2-7.
Davis batted .750 in the series with nine base hits, seven runs scored and three stolen bases. On Sunday, Davis singled in all four of her at bats while adding two RBI and two runs.
Barr led the victors with three RBI on a pair of hits.
Davis started the bottom of the first with a single just over the third-base line. She then swiped second base for her team-high eighth stolen base of the season before scoring on the home run by Barr, who launched her league-leading sixth long ball just fair down the left field line.
The Hornets cut the deficit in half with their only run in the third inning on a double off the bat of freshman Courtney Kohel, who paced DSU with two hits.
The Eagles added their next two runs in the fourth on three singles. Freshman
Taylor Hilliard lined a single off the pitcher and later scored on hit through the left side of the infield by Edwards. Davis then plated Edwards with a single that quickly scooted under the pitcher's legs, through the middle of the infield and to centerfielder.
A four-run sixth inning capped the maroon and gray scoring. The late scoring featured an RBI-double by Edwards, run-producing singles by Davis and Barr and capped with a one-run single by senior
Madison Mifsud that extend her hit streak to seven games.
NCCU finished with a 13-4 hit advantage, which was the second straight contest the Eagles recorded a baker's dozen hits.
Barr hurled the first 3 2/3 innings, which was one out shy of being eligible for the win despite only allowing one run and leaving the contest with the lead. Eubanks (6-6) took over in the circle and hurled 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Eubanks leveled her season record with her third win in two days while fanning three Hornets.
NC Central will continue its homestand when the Eagles host East Carolina University on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
