NCCU Drops Games to Canisius and UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team lost a pair of game on day one of a three-day tournament at UNC Wilmington on Friday. Sophomore Hailey Batista accounted for the lone NCCU run as the Eagles slipped up to Canisius College, 8-0, and to host UNCW, 10-1.

NC Central (2-8 Overall) will remain in Wilmington and play the same two teams again on Saturday. The Eagles will first face UNCW at 11 a.m., followed by Canisius at 4 p.m.

GAME ONE: Canisius 8, NC Central 0 (6 Innings)

Sophomore starting pitcher Megan Giese held the Eagles to just one hit as the Griffins posted the eight-run shutout. Giese (2-2) leveled her record after matching her career-high strikeout total with 10 K's against NCCU.

Giese was flirting with a perfect game until senior catcher Madison Mifsud ended the bid with a one-out single in the top of the fifth. That base knock would account for NCCU's only base runner in the game.

Sophomore center fielder Christie McGee-Ross had three hits and three runs to pace Canisius. A trio of Griffin batters drove in a pair of runs.

Canisius (5-4) moved over .500 on the season with the victory.

GAME TWO: UNCW 10, NC Central 1 (5 Innings)

Batista hit her first home run of the season to score NCCU's lone run, but the Seahawks were able to score in each of the first four innings on the way to the nine-run triumph.

Batista, who hit three homers as a rookie last season, launched her first of 2022 down the left field line with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

Senior Camryn Dean led the Seahawks, reaching base in all three of her plate appearances and driving in three runs with a bases-clearing, three-run double in the fourth.

NCCU was held to just two hits, with freshman Jaidyn Hamby account for the other hit for the Eagles right after Batista hit her home run.

UNCW improved to 10-2 on the season with the win.
