DURHAM, N.C. – Junior forward
Tianna Carter posted her fourth double-double of the season with game-high totals of 17 points and 13 rebounds in leading the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team to a 73-49 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over visiting Delaware State University on Saturday afternoon inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Carter, who has scored in double digits in four straight contests, reached a new season-high point total with her 17 points. Carter's fourth double-double of the season was also her second straight double-double.
Freshman guard
Diamond Thomas also reached double-digit points for an NCCU squad that had balanced scoring on the day with all nine active players producing points. Thomas made three 3-pointers on the way to 12 points, which was the 11th consecutive double-digit scoring performance for the five time MEAC Rookie of the Week.
Sophomore guard
Paris McBride filled up the box score with seven points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists while senior forward
Ashlyn Lockard and freshman guard
Nia Ford both tallied eight points.
The Eagles scored the first 15 points of the game and never trailed. NCCU limited Delaware State to just one made field goal in the first quarter to lead 19-6 after 10 minutes of play. The Hornets closed to within one possession at 25-22 after they connected on a trio of treys in the second quarter. However, the Eagles closed the half on an 8-1 run to take a 33-23 lead into halftime.
Carter had already flirted with completing her double-double by halftime as she led all players into the locker room with 12 points, eight rebounds and one block.
After an even third quarter, NCCU pulled away to the 24-point victory by outscoring DSU by 23-9 down the stretch. Junior
Madalyn Anderson scored all seven of her points in that outburst while classmate
Simone Edmundson scored four of her six points in that quarter.
NCCU forced the visitors into 31 turnovers, which produced 35 extra points for the maroon and gray.
Redshirt senior Janasia Law led the Hornets with 15 points, but DSU remained winless on the season at 0-19 overall and 0-10 in the MEAC.
NC Central (4-16, 2-8) will next host University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
