DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman outside hitter
Kamren Harper tallied 9.5 points to pace the North Carolina Central University volleyball team in a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference home loss to Delaware State University on Friday evening.
The Hornets, who lead the MEAC in hitting percentage, fired at a .302 clip in claiming the 25-12, 25-22, 25-14 triumph. Delaware State (13-4 Overall, 3-1 MEAC) entered the contest tied with NCCU for third place in the league standings.
Harper provided the Eagles with good play from all aspects of the game, supplying team-best totals of six kills, two aces and two blocks (one solo) while ranking second on the team with seven digs.
Junior
Abby Vacha added five kills for a second straight contest. However, freshman
Tori Wilson and sophomore
Kennedy Clark were the only other two NCCU players with multiple kills with just two apiece.
Sophomore libero
Loren Johnson finished with nine digs while the sophomore setter tandem of
Vanila Pulu-Suliafu and
Azra Osmanovic totaled eight and seven assists, respectively.
DSU scored the first nine points in the match on senior Karen Cordero's service rotation to set the tone of the match. Cordero led all players with three aces while also contributing seven kills and nine digs.
An ace by Johnson tied the second set late for the Eagles, but a trio of Hornets rattled off consecutive kills to secure the middle frame. Delaware State kept the momentum and never trailed in the third set like the first set to complete the sweep.
The visitors had eight total blocks with sophomore Kelsie Dawson contributing on five of them. Junior Valeria Otero and junior Alondra Maldonado topped the Hornets by each netting eight kills. Senior Malgorzata Andersohn and junior Alayna Lacy logged 17 and 15 assists, correspondingly, while senior libero Jasmal Cruz had 14 digs.
NC Central (3-12, 2-2) will conclude a three-match homestand when the Eagles entertain University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday at 1 p.m.
