DURHAM, N.C. – Senior
Miles Clark outlasted his opponent in three sets to win the final match of the day to prevent the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team from being swept in a 6-1 road loss at Duke University Sunday evening inside the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Clark notched his win atop NCCU's lineup.
In a seesaw battle, Clark held off freshman Connor Krug by a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 margin. Clark, who was named Second Team All-MEAC last season, leveled his singles record to 1-1 on the early season
The Blue Devils, who were playing their second match of the day after opening their season with a 7-0 sweep of Elon University a few hours earlier, notched a pair of 6-2 wins in both completed doubles matches and secured straight-set triumphs in the other five singles matches against NCCU to improve to 2-0 overall.
Duke used 10 different singles players in its two dual matches Sunday and all 10 Blue Devils were able to get in the win column at least one time.
The Eagles used the same singles lineup they used in their opener on Friday. NCCU's other singles results included senior No. 2
Amit Baran (L, 6-2, 6-2), senior No. 3
Sebastian Pino (L, 6-1, 6-0), freshman No. 4
Oliver Saarinen (L, 6-1, 6-4), sophomore No. 5
Shaka Cristellotti (L, 6-0, 6-0) and junior No. 6
LaQuon Gilchrist (L, 6-1, 6-0).
NC Central (0-2) will continue its eight-match road swing to start the season when the Eagles next visit UNC Asheville on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 3:30 p.m.
