Janok Notches Rare Triple-Double in NCCU’s Road Match at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Sophomore setter Lauren Janok becomes the first North Carolina Central University volleyball player to record a triple-double in the programs NCAA Division I era in Tuesday's 3-2 non-conference road loss at UNCG.

Janok finished with 10 kills, 33 assists and 15 digs for NCCU's first triple-double in the DI era (since the start of the 2007-08 season). All three match totals are new career-highs for Janok.

NC Central jumped out to a 2-0 set lead as Janok nearly completed her triple-double in those first two frames having already accumulated eight kills, 17 assists and 10 digs.

However, the Spartans hit .295 over the final three sets to rally for the 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 15-10 victory. Senior Kayla White and junior Grey Breen led the victors with 16 and 15 kills, respectively, as UNCG (6-1) won its fifth straight match.

Morris tallied four kills and two aces in the opening set to help the Eagles fly out to the early advantage. NCCU never trailed in the opener.

In the second set, NCCU was trailing 22-20 before closing the frame with five straight points to double-up its cushion. The late rally featured kills by senior Ammaarah Williams and junior Abby Vacha.

The Eagles jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set with senior McKayla Young supplying a pair of kills and a block during that surge. The Spartans answered with eight straight points to sprint ahead. UNCG led for the rest of the set to start its comeback. A couple kills by senior Arlanda Faulkner helped NCCU pull within one at 21-20, but the Spartans scored the final four points after a timeout.

UNCG dominated the fourth set to level the match. The Spartans had their best hitting set of the evening with a .333 hitting percentage.

The hosts jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the fifth-set sprint to 15-points, before NCCU made one last attempt to complete the road upset. The Eagles went on a 7-2 run to pull within one point. A pair of kills by both Williams and senior Estfania Louis aided in NCCU's rally that forced UNCG to call a time out clinging to an 11-10 lead. The Spartans once again came out of the timeout with a response like the third set, winning the next four points to clinch the victory.

Janok hit .360 for the match and added one ace and two block assists to her 10 kills and 33 assists to contribute on 46 of NCCU's 63 scoring points.

Faulkner and Williams topped the maroon and gray with 12 kills apiece. Faulkner added 17 digs for her first double-double of the season. Morris finished with 21 digs, seven kills and five assists. Sophomore Alyssa Pieh matched Morris with 21 digs. Young chipped in a team best five blocks (one solo, four assists) to go along with four kills.

NC Central (1-4) will next play two matches at the Aggie/Phoenix Volley for Unity Tournament over the weekend, beginning with a showdown at North Carolina A&T State University on Friday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.
