DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University redshirt sophomore golfer
Daniel Barbare has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for July 2021 in recognition of his outstanding performance on the golf course and in the classroom.
Barbare capped his third season with the Eagles by finishing third place out of 45 golfers at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship in May. He carded a one-under 71 in his middle round of the three-day tournament at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, to help produce NCCU's best individual finish at the annual PGA event as a Division I competitor (dating back to 2009).
The local Raleigh, North Carolina, resident has posted NCCU's best individual stroke average per round each of the last three seasons. Barbare has a career average of 77.03 shots per round for the maroon and gray heading into 2021-22, which would rank as the fourth best individual career scoring average in NCCU's modern era.
Barbare closed out the 2020-21 campaign with three consecutive top-10 finishes. He carded a career-best round of 70 to place sixth at the BCGCA HBCU Invitational before placing in the top-10 at the MEAC Championships.
The two-time team MVP (2020 and 2021) has six career top-10 finishes. Barbare also earned the NCCU men's golf Players Choice Award as a freshman (2019).
Barbare boasts a 3.752 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as a chemistry major at NCCU. As he concentrates on an ACS certification and minors in business, Barbare has earned MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Team and University Honors Program status and plans to pursue a master's degree in chemistry after graduating NCCU in the spring of 2022. He presented chemistry research at the 26th Society for Redox Biology & Medicine International Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, and helped NCCU capture the top prize at the 2019 HP HBCU Business Challenge.
