DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University softball senior
Joirea Dumas has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for April 2021 in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
Dumas led the Eagles in all three 'Triple Crown' categories as a senior with a .333 batting average, nine home runs and 27 RBI.
Those marks also ranked in the top-5 of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 2021. Dumas led the league in home runs, ranked second in RBI and was fifth in batting average.
Dumas became the first NCCU hitter to go deep in three consecutive contests in the MEAC DI era (since 2011-12) and the first Eagle since 2008 when she launched homers against Howard University, Delaware State University and Coppin State University in the MEAC North/South Round-Up in April. She hit a fourth home run in that event against Morgan State University as she finished league play with 16 RBI in 16 conference clashes.
The first baseman was named First Team All-MEAC and then MEAC All-Tournament Team. Dumas launched her MEAC-best ninth home run in the title game of the tourney to give the eventual runner-up Eagles and early lead.
Dumas started all 44 games for the Eagles and finished with a .978 OPS and 10 doubles. She drew more walks (11) than times she struck out (10) all season.
Her nine home runs also tied the NCAA DI era program record for home runs in a single season, matching the nine homers hit by Ava Dolan in 2018.
Dumas graduated from NCCU in May with a 3.723 cumulative grade point average (GPA). The MEAC All-Academic Team honoree was a behavioral and social science major at NCCU and is studying for the MCAT. She plans to take a gap year and work as a medical scribe/assistant and possibly a pre-med program before attending medical school to become an anesthesiologist.
