NCCU Nips Winthrop in Nightcap for a Midweek Split

CARY, N.C. — Senior Joirea Dumas totaled four hits on the day, including an RBI-single in the five-run third inning, and classmate Kiara Hurley retired all nine batters she faced to perverse a 6-5 victory for the North Carolina Central University softball team in a 6-5 victory over Winthrop University in game two of Thursday's non-conference doubleheader at Thomas Brooks Park.

The Winthrop Eagles won the opener 6-0 before the NCCU Eagles answered back in the nightcap for their fifth win in their last 10 games. Winthrop ended the day with a 17-19 overall record.

NC Central (5-21) next visits Campbell University in a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE: Winthrop 6, NC Central 0

Graduate student Madyson Watson and sophomore Aisha Weixlmann combined for 14 strikeouts in a shutout performance by Winthrop. Watson (10-8) went the first five innings with 11 K's for the win before Weixlmann tossed the final two innings with three strikeouts.

Third baseman Ashley Westbrooks provided the big bat for the victors with two hits, including a bases-clearing, three-run double in the sixth.

Dumas had two of NCCU's three hits with a pair of singles in her first two at bats.

Freshman Kaylah Barr kept the Eagles in the game with four consecutive scoreless innings before Westbrooks broke the game open late.

GAME TWO: NC Central 6, Winthrop 5

NCCU scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third and then held on for the triumph. Dumas, sophomore Maegan Garrison and freshman Hailey Batista all tallied two hits.

Senior Caroline Campbell (3-4) notched her third win of the season after hurling the first four innings.

The host Eagles were then clinging to their one-run lead when Hurley entered the game in the top of the fifth and she recorded nine straight outs to keep the maroon and gray ahead. Hurley fanned five Winthrop batters on the way to her second save of the season.

Winthrop jumped out to a 3-1 lead before NCCU surged ahead with its big third inning. Batista started the rally with a double off the left-field fence and immediately scored on an ensuing single by Dumas. The outburst was concluded by three consecutive RBI's off the bats of senior K'Lea Parks, Garrison and freshman Imara Harrell.

Sophomore Diamond Porter scored twice for the victorious Eagles.
