Berghaus and Dragovic Win Doubles Match on their Senior Day

DURHAM, N.C. — Seniors Maru Berghaus and Ivana Dragovic were recognized before their final dual match at North Carolina Central University and then took the court and won a doubles match as partners to highlight play for the Eagles in a 5-1 non-conference loss to Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday at the NCCU Tennis Courts.

Berghaus and Dragovic were ahead 5-3 in their doubles match, but sophomore Victoire De Samucewicz and freshman Jesse Hollins won three of the next four games to force a tiebreaker. De Samucewicz and Hollins jumped out a 4-2 lead the tiebreaker before Berghaus and Dragovic made their own rally, winning five of the next six points to clinch the 7-6 (5) win.

The triumph was the fifth of their final season and the 11th overall time Berghaus and Dragovic have won together as a doubles tandem over the past three seasons. Dragovic is a junior at NCCU, but will be graduating early in December of 2021.

Freshman Maria Picazo tallied NCCU's lone team point with a singles win. Picazo netted her win at the fifth slot in the lineup, winning a superset tiebreaker to knock off freshman Isabella Weatherhead by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.

Picazo's win was her sixth singles victory of her rookie season. Picazo and fellow freshmen Josefa Fernandez and Jade Houston all finished with 6-7 singles records in their first campaign representing the maroon and gray.

The Chanticleers won the doubles points and the picked up straight-set victories in the top four singles matches to secure the team triumph. Coastal Carolina improved to 12-5 on the season.

NC Central ended its season with a 3-10 overall record. The Eagles had a 1-2 ledger in league play to finish third out of four teams in the MEAC Southern Division (top two teams advance to the MEAC Tennis Championships).
