Eagles fall to Coppin State in Semifinals of MEAC Volleyball Championship

NORFOLK, Va.—Senior libero Yomaries Villegas (Ocala, Fla.) picked up a season-high 24 digs and junior outside hitter Ammaarah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) totaled nine kills, but North Carolina Central University was unable to stop red-hot Coppin State University, extending its win streak to 10 matches with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-19) semifinal victory in the MEAC Volleyball Championship.

NCCU showed much promise in the begging as they kept the game close before the No. 1 seed in the MEAC northern division went on a 5-2 run to go up 15-20 before the Eagles walked Coppin State down to be within one point (23-24). However, MEAC Freshman of the Year Chudear Tut sealed the set.

In the second set, NCCU stayed within striking distance before junior outside hitter Miajovon Coleman led Coppin State to a 10-2 run, scoring four points during the stretch to take a commanding 22-13 lead as they cruised to a final score of 25-16.

In the third set, the Eagles of NCCU continued to battle early on, coming within two points before Coppin State went on 6-1 run to go up 23-15. Coppin State ended the set and the match with a final score of 25-19.

NCCU senior McKayla Young (Charlotte, N.C.) finished the match blasting seven kills, while freshman setter Lauren Janok (Rougemont, N.C.) dished out 23 assists along with 11 digs to tie her career-high.

NCCU ends the season with a 4-3 record, as Coppin State will compete against North Carolina A&T in the MEAC Championship game Saturday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
