DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University football student-athlete Jessie Malit has been selected as one of the 2021-22 Newman Civic Fellows. Malit was identified by the Office of Community Engagement and Service for his work with the E.A.G.L.E.S. (Educated Actions Generate Lifelong Empowerment & Success) Vote initiative and the March to the Polls event, and was then nominated by NCCU Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye.

The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes and supports community-committed students who are change-makers and public problem-solvers at the Campus Compact member institutions. 

During the yearlong program, Campus Compact will be providing students with training and resources that nurture the assets and passions of students to develop strategies for social change. The program also provides monthly virtual events, a national conference, and a local mentor to ensure students are on track with personal goals, as well as building a national network of the most engaged student civic leaders who can become resources to each other. 

Malit is a senior, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science with a concentration in Pre-Law and Theory. Mailt also is a defensive lineman for the Eagles football team, where he recorded 26 tackles with 5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks as a 12-game starter in 2019.

Malit has been actively involved in not just the Durham community, but in his community at home in Concord, North Carolina. In Concord, Malit volunteered at a battered women's shelter and led his church youth group in providing food and shelter for homeless men. In Durham, he volunteered at the Food Bank of North Carolina and local elementary schools, and advocated for support for poverty issues including housing, food security and quality education. He also serves as the SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) Vice President at NCCU.
