ELON, N.C. — Senior first baseman
Joirea Dumas drove three runs on three hits, including her second home run of the season, for the North Carolina Central University softball team in pair of road losses at Elon University on Sunday.
The Phoenix doubled up the Eagles, 8-4, in the opener and completed the three-game sweep with a 10-3 triumph in the nightcap. Elon moved within one game of .500 at 6-7 overall.
NC Central (0-15) is next scheduled to host East Tennessee State University in a non-conference doubleheader at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary on Sunday, 21, beginning at noon.
GAME ONE: Elon 8, NC Central 4
A two-run homer by Dumas in the top of the third tied the game at 4-4, but the Phoenix were able to score the final four runs on the contest to take the opener.
Junior Lauryn Clarke had the go-ahead single in the home half of the third and a three-run home run by senior Ally Repko in the sixth gave the hosts some late insurance.
Repko also had a three-run double in the first as she finished the contest with six RBI.
NCCU took the initial 2-nil advantage with a pair of runs in the top of the first, which included an RBI groundout by senior
Kaitlyn Macon before Elon scored four times in the bottom half of the opening frame.
Dumas had two of NCCU's five hits, including her two-run shot down the left field line.
Senior
Caroline Campbell (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four run over six innings of relief work with two strikeouts.
Junior McKenzie Weber notched her first win of the season. Weber (1-2) went the distance, allowing just two earned runs over seven innings with one strikeout.
GAME TWO: Elon 10, NC Central 3
The Phoenix scored multiple runs in four different innings to pull away to the seven-run victory. Repko capped Elon's scoring with a two-run triple for her seventh and eighth runs batted in on the day.
The Eagles scored a lone run in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore
Diamond Porter drove in senior
Nadia Blevins for NCCU's first run with a sac bunt. Dumas picked up her third RBI of the day with a single that also plated Blevins. Junior
Madison Webb knocked in classmate
Madison Mifsud for the final maroon and gray tally with a double.
Blevins hit NCCU's first triple of the season to leadoff the third. Dumas, Mifsud and Porter all hit safely in both ends of the double dip for the Eagles.
Graduate student Kenna Quinn (5-3) earned her second win of the series, allowing just one run over the first four innings. Senior
Kiara Hurley (0-10) suffered the loss despite half of the 10 runs scored by Elon were unearned due to a pair of NCCU errors. Quinn and Hurley both had two strikeouts.
