ELON, N.C. — Freshman
Hailey Batista drove in the only run for the North Carolina Central University softball team in a 7-1 non-conference road loss at Elon University on Saturday.
The Phoenix hit a trio of home runs to improve to 4-7 on the season.
A solo blast by junior Lauryn Clarke in Elon's first at bat of the game helped put the hosts ahead for majority of the contest. The Phoenix also got long balls off the bats of senior Ally Repko in the third and freshman Gabi Schaal in the fifth.
Schaal's two-run homer was her second of the season while the solo shots by Clarke and Repko were the first for both players. The trio all had two hits apiece as the Phoenix outhit the Eagles by a 10-4 margin.
Batista ended the shutout bid of Elon starting pitcher Kenna Quinn with her double in the right field gap with one out in the top of the sixth. Batista leads the maroon and gray with three extra-base hits and three RBI on the season.
Senior
Joirea Dumas started the rally with a single and freshman pinch runner
Christy Burroughs stole second before scoring on Batista's second base hit of the day.
Dumas and junior
Madison Mifsud both had a hit and a walk as they each reached base twice in three plate appearances.
Quinn has all four of Elon's wins on the season and she only allowed one run over seven innings. Quinn (4-3) finished with three strikeouts while scattering four hits and issuing four walks in the complete-game performance.
NC Central (0-13) will conclude its series at Elon with a doubleheader against the Phoenix on Sunday beginning at noon.
